The School Bus Stop Project Kick Off Celebration at Brunswick

The School Bus Stop Project

Eighth Graders from Convent of the Sacred Heart and Brunswick School join together to launch their design project: The School Bus Stop.

Students watch a clip from the documentary "Urbanized' showing the mayor of Bogota, Enrique Penalosa, explaining the far flung, transformational effects of innovating the public bus service and bus stops on urban living.

Brunswick Art Teacher, Lorna LaRiviere describes the Industrial Design course she took at Rhode Island School of Design, on which the CSH/Brunswick collaboration is based.

The Bus Stop Project

Monday, November 17^th, marked the first meeting of the School Bus Stop Project, a collaborative alliance between Convent of the Sacred Heart and Brunswick 8^th grade students and their art teachers, Mrs Annette Grueterich and Mrs. Lorna LaRiviere, The girls crossed King Street for the kickoff celebration and information session held in the Art Studio at Brunswick Middle School.

Students from both schools will address a real life design challenge: how to design and construct the ideal school bus stop. Factors they will consider include shelter, comfort, accessibility, safety, sustainability and the environment.

The School Bus Stop Project is an industrial design and architecture venture derived from a course offered at the Rhode Island School of Design. Students will base their designs on the results of their own extensive inquiry, using innovative, participatory research methods and collaborative conversations. Teachers will offer a series of technical lessons, such as estimated two-point perspective sketching and 3-D modeling, providing the tools necessary to bring the students’ designs to life.
